Razorpay is building AI-powered payment agents using Anthropic's Claude to automate tasks like recovering abandoned purchases, retrying failed subscriptions, and forecasting cash flows. This is part of a broader industry shift toward "agentic commerce," where AI handles financial tasks and enables transactions through chat interfaces.
The company introduced an AI-native platform to simplify business onboarding and payment operations, and it allows businesses to create custom AI agents using simple commands. Razorpay is also testing AI-led in-app commerce with major platforms like Zomato and Swiggy to allow discovery and payment within a single conversation.
The main topics covered are Razorpay's AI agent development, the industry-wide adoption of AI in payments, and the specific functionalities and tests of the new technology.
Payment aggregator Razorpay on Thursday announced it is building AI-powered agents for payments using Anthropic's Claude chatbot.
The agents can handle routine tasks such as recovering abandoned purchases, retrying failed subscriptions, resolving disputes and forecasting cash flows, the company said in a statement.
The move is part of a broader shift in the payments industry toward agentic commerce, where AI can perform financial tasks for businesses. Payment companies are exploring ways for customers to complete transactions directly through AI assistants and chat interfaces.
Payment aggregators such as Cashfree, card networks Visa and Mastercard, and merchant processors, including PayU and Pine Labs, are also working with AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude, as reported by ET on February 20 this year.
Razorpayâs integration was done through Anthropic's Claude agent SDK. The fintechâs AI agents help businesses recover sales by reaching out to customers who leave their shopping carts. They can send a message or voice alert to ask why the customer didnât complete the purchase and offer a reminder or small incentive to finish payment, the company said in a statement.
The fintech has also introduced an agentic experience platform, a new AI-native layer designed to simplify how online businesses onboard to Razorpay, integrate payments into their products, and manage payment operations, the statement said.
âBusinesses don't just need more software anymore, they need intelligence that can act,â Harshil Mathur, chief executive of Razorpay, said in the statement.
The company also said businesses can use these agents to create their own AI agents using simple language commands. These agents can connect to platforms such as Shopify and Shiprocket and messaging apps such as WhatsApp, the statement said.
Irina Ghose, managing director, India, at Anthropic, said, âRazorpay's work with Claude shows how AI agents can recover revenue, resolve disputes, and predict cash flow. It's a great example of what AI can do when it is built into business operations.â
Razorpay is also testing AI-led in-app commerce with various platforms, including Zomato, Swiggy, PVR INOX and Vodafone Idea. Customers can discover, decide and pay within the same AI conversation, said the statement.
